The
Hammer Grip |
|
This is the basic throwing grip used
for full turn throws. All other grips are generally
modifications of the hammer grip. The knife is grasped as one
would hold the handle of a hammer or similar tool. In one of
Harry McEvoy's books, he associates this grip with the sportsman
method of throwing. Some throwers will place the
thumb along side of the knife, pointing towards the tip, instead
of wrapping around the knife. This is purely preference and the
grip you use will depend on your teacher (or book), what is
comfortable for you and ultimately what works for you. |

The
Modified Hammer or Spline Grip |
|
This is a modified hammer grip used
for full turn throws. The knife is grasped as one would hold the
handle of a hammer or similar tool with the exception of the
thumb being placed on the spline or edge of the blade. In one of
Harry McEvoy's books, he associates this grip with the
professional method of throwing. Conversly, in Gil Hibben's
book, he instructs this grip with the sportsman's method.
Once again, this is a preferencial issue and depends on
what is comfortable for you and ultimately what works for you. |
|
The
Vertical Blade Grip |
|
This grip can be either a hammer
grip or a modified hammer grip used for half turn throws. The
knife is grasped similarly as a hammer grip or a modified hammer
grip and thrown exactly the same. Once again, this is
a preferencial issue and depends on what is comfortable for you
and ultimately what works for you. Use
this grip only for knives with non-sharpened edges.

The
Horizontal Blade Grip |
|
Use this grip for blade throwing
knives with one edge sharpened. ALWAYS ensure the sharpened
edge is away from the palm and NEVER wrap the fingers around
or over the sharpened edge.
This grip will stick the knife with
the blade parallel with the ground surface. This is
particularly hard on the knife as there is a greater tendency
to break the tip off.
This type of grip would be used
primarily for a 1/2 turn, close proximity throw.
